Rio de Janeiro bound!
On Monday evening, the Wintersail group was treated to a delightful visit from local Saanich couple, Jackie Gay and John McRoberts who are in the process of preparing to compete at the 2016 Paralympic Games, taking their SKUD 18 keelboat to Rio de Janeiro. The inspirational duo offered insight into the world of competition with their disabilities and left the group with much to consider and ponder during their training not only here in Victoria, but at their local facilities as well.
The two shared their personal experiences, and wanted to make sure everyone left with a powerful piece of advice. “You don’t know what you’re capable of in this life –you will be faced with things and you will overcome them.” said McRoberts. “Don’t be afraid to fail, just go out there-have fun, live life and sail!”
McRoberts has competed at the previous two Paralympic Games – earning silver in Beijing and placing fourth in London, the 2016 Paralympics will be a first for Gay, and a first for the couple as a team.
