CPO1 Catherine Gagnon
“You get to meet people from across the country and try new things, like meeting Royalty.”
There’s just no denying it, CPO Gagnon is focused and on a mission. Canada’s top sea cadet is just months away from aging out of the program but she already has her foot firmly in her next career. The 18-year-old is in her second year of post-secondary, studying sciences at the University of Alberta. From there it’s off to Med School and then on to serve in the medical branch of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Somewhere in there she also plans on enrolling as a CIC officer – a chance to give back to a program that has provided her with so many possibilities. “It’s been an amazing experience, especially for leadership. There are opportunities you never thought of – for me it was sailing,” she adds. “I had no idea you could even sail in Alberta!” And sail she can, Gagnon also finished as top cadet in her advanced sailing course.
As she prepares for her next adventure, Gagnon is delighted to wrap up her cadet career in the presence of Belgian Royalty. “The night was very informative, you really did get a sense of what it was like for Canadians during the First World War.”
